Gratitude to Allah is a central act of worship that should recognize everyday and religious blessings, resist envy, and turn blessings into righteous action benefiting others.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The khutbah urges listeners to prioritize remembrance of Allah over worldly desires.
- It explains gratitude through awareness of ordinary blessings, concealed sins, and personal growth.
- It warns that comparing oneself with wealthier people produces envy and discontent.
- It connects gratitude to current suffering in Gaza, Syria, Sudan, and other communities.
- It teaches that gratitude must include the heart, speech, and actions that serve others.
- It presents gratitude’s spiritual benefits, including protection from punishment, increased blessings, and Allah’s pleasure.
In the khateeb's words
“How many times you thank Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala that I can hear, I can see? How many times you thank Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala that I can swallow the food?”
“You know, sometimes people ask you to intervene, to help them in a certain way. Use that connection for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that many familiar things, like water, food, sight, and hearing, are blessings from Allah that we can easily overlook. The khateeb explained that comparing what we have with what others have can make us forget how much we have already received. He encouraged us to remember Allah's help in our achievements and to thank Him for Islam, the Qur'an, and forgiveness as well as material gifts. Gratitude means saying alhamdulillah, feeling thankful in our hearts, and using our blessings to help others. He especially urged those who can give charity to help people facing hunger now, without waiting for Ramadan.
- What ordinary thing did you enjoy today that you would like to thank Allah for?
- What ability or resource could you use to make someone's day easier this week?
- What is something you have learned from the Qur'an that you feel grateful for?
