True faith requires prompt obedience
“One thing we have to realize as Muslims, all of the rulings in Islam are not always to make us feel comfortable.”
True faith is measured by immediate, unhesitating submission to Allah's commands, 'we hear and we obey', not by comfort, feelings, or minimal effort.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Opening duas and introduction: the status of believers who hear Allah's command and obey without delay
- Tafsir Qur'an bil Qur'an: Allah explains His own verses, citing Surah al-Baqarah 2:213 on mankind once being one community
- Human nature resists being told what to do, but Islam means peaceful submission to Allah rather than comfort
- Contrast in Surah al-Baqarah: the Children of Israel said 'we hear and we disobey' (2:93) versus the righteous who say 'we hear and we obey'
- Guidance versus misguidance is submission, not intelligence or eloquence; Allah ranks believers by effort (Surah an-Nisa 4:95)
- No shortcuts in deen: Quran memorization and tajweed require committed effort
- The danger of 'I just felt like it': the Samiri and the golden calf (Surah Ta-Ha 20:96) as the root of deviation
- Cooperating with non-Muslims in righteousness (5:2) and encouraging people of other faiths toward good, then announcements and prayer
In the khateeb's words
“One thing we have to realize as Muslims, all of the rulings in Islam are not always to make us feel comfortable.”
“The thing that makes us comfortable in practicing this religion is that we know it is from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“Those that don't try to find a loophole or make an excuse.”
“It's not built on the feelings of people. It's built upon the revelation.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that being Muslim means hearing Allah's command and obeying quickly, even when it doesn't feel comfortable. The speaker said the difference between guidance and misguidance isn't how smart or educated we are, but whether we submit to Allah. He warned us about the dangerous phrase 'I just felt like it,' because following our feelings alone can lead us away from revelation. He also reminded us that Allah rewards effort differently, so there are no shortcuts in our deen, we have to actually strive. Let's ask Allah to make us among those who say 'we hear and we obey.'
- What's one thing from the khutbah you want to try doing this week?
- Can you think of a time you didn't want to follow a rule until you remembered it was from Allah?
- How can saying 'I just felt like it' get us into trouble?
