Worship should engage the whole person
“When it comes to our goal of getting closer to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, it is essential for you and I to diversify our ibadah as well.”
A healthy Muslim community is sustained by worship that engages the body, heart, mind, and the fulfillment of human potential.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines the ideal Muslim community as one united family with worship at its heart.
- Explains four dimensions of worship: bodily rituals, the heart, the mind, and fulfilling one's potential.
- Urges believers to diversify their worship rather than repeatedly practicing only their strongest acts.
- Describes humility, trust, and reliance on Allah as inward worship of the heart.
- Encourages parents and communities to thoughtfully address young people's genuine questions about faith.
- Calls listeners to identify their potential and choose one area of worship for focused effort that week.
In the khateeb's words
“the heart and the soul of the Muslim community is the worship of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“When it comes to our goal of getting closer to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, it is essential for you and I to diversify our ibadah as well.”
“What needs to be done is we need to help this child, this young boy or this young girl to do ibadah of his or her mind.”
“I will not die I will not leave this world until I fulfilled my potential as a human being.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that we are one community and one family, with the worship of Allah at our heart. The khateeb described four ways to worship: through our bodies, our hearts, our minds, and fulfilling our potential. Alongside prayer and other prescribed practices, we can draw closer to Allah by developing humility, love, trust, and reliance on Him. Using our minds to learn our religion and thoughtfully explore sincere questions is also part of worship. He encouraged us to work on the forms of worship we find difficult and to use Allah's gifts to grow and help others. His homework was to choose worship of the heart, worship of the mind, or fulfilling our potential as a focus for the coming week.
- What could being humble look like when someone points out a mistake you made?
- What question about Allah or our religion would you like us to explore together?
- What ability could you practice this week that would help someone else?
