Use worldly life to prepare for eternity
“The dunya is not inherently evil.”
Because worldly life is fleeting and full of distraction, believers should use its time, wealth, and community as means to seek Allah's pleasure and prepare for the eternal Hereafter.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Life alternates between ease and hardship; yesterday is closed, tomorrow is unknown, and today is for good deeds.
- The Prophet's guidance frames believers as temporary travelers and warns that wealth can lead to destructive competition.
- Islam teaches balance: enjoy worldly blessings without making them one's greatest concern or abandoning the Hereafter.
- Time, wealth, and daily activities should serve worship, Allah's pleasure, and sincere intentions.
- The Qur'an, Sunnah, and believing community provide anchors, companionship, accountability, and unity.
- Life passes quickly, death and judgment are certain, and believers should detach from distractions while pursuing the Hereafter.
- The khutbah closes with supplications for guidance, forgiveness, Paradise, and justice and freedom for Palestine.
In the khateeb's words
“the outcome of yesterday is closed, today is for good deeds, and tomorrow is but a hope.”
“But the best of you are the ones who take from both, from this and from that.”
“We're not meant to walk this path alone. It's community that provides companionship, And accountability, That helps us stay focused, On our ultimate goal, To please Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“The dunya is not inherently evil, But our interaction with it, This is what determines, Its value in our lives.”
For the dinner table
Life changes quickly, and yesterday is gone while tomorrow is unknown, so today is the time to do good. The khutbah teaches that the world is temporary and should not become our biggest worry or our definition of success. We can enjoy Allah's blessings while keeping them in our hands rather than our hearts, using our time and resources to seek His pleasure. The Qur'an, the Sunnah, and a supportive community help us stay steady and accountable. We should remember death and the Hereafter, keep our intentions sincere, and ask Allah for guidance, forgiveness, and relief for the oppressed.
- What is one good deed you can make time for today?
- What is something you enjoy that you can use to help someone else?
- Who helps you remember what matters when life feels distracting?
