Serving parents opens the path to Paradise

“Being bad to our parents, being disrespectful to our parents, being unkind to our parents can be the reason why we enter the hellfire.”

The khateeb, at 15:10

For the dinner table

The khutbah reminds us that worshiping Allah and honoring parents are repeatedly joined in the Qur'an. Serving parents is not a small side duty; it can bring enormous reward, even described as doors to Jannah. The story of Uwais al-Qarni shows that quiet care for a mother can be honored even when no one sees it. We were encouraged to call or message our parents, obey them in what is good, and do kind things before they ask. If a parent has died, we can still help through sincere du'a, and we should do all of this with patience rather than resentment.

  1. What is one small thing you could do this week that would make a parent or caregiver happy?
  2. Why do you think the khutbah compared parents to doors to Jannah?
  3. How can we help a family member respectfully without waiting to be asked?
