How tyranny grows into genocide
“When you divide, you can conquer.”
The Qur'anic story of Pharaoh teaches Muslims to recognize how tyranny and genocide develop, then combine faith, informed study, and communal action against oppression while trusting Allah's justice.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines taqwa and calls listeners to reflect on what they prepare for tomorrow.
- Introduces Qur'anic stories, especially Musa and Pharaoh, as lessons for understanding tyranny.
- Explains how supremacy, division, labeling, dehumanization, and persecution can escalate into genocide.
- Applies this framework to Gaza, India, Bosnia, and threats affecting Muslim institutions in Texas.
- Urges informed study, Qur'an reflection, community conversation, and strategic action rather than silence.
- Closes with trust in Allah, solidarity with the oppressed, and prayers for relief and victory.
In the khateeb's words
“genocide does not happen overnight. People do not wake up in the morning and say, let's go kill everybody else. It takes stages. It takes steps.”
“Because when you divide, you can conquer. When you divide, you can classify. When you divide, you can label.”
“you gotta sit down and really understand the Qur'an and then understand what's happening in today's world and start marrying these things together”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that the Qur’an’s stories offer lessons for our lives today. Through the story of Musa and Fir'aun, the khateeb warned about pride, dividing people into groups, and treating others as less than human. He connected those warnings to the suffering of Palestinians and concerns about Muslims in India and our own communities. He encouraged us to learn what is happening, reflect carefully on the Qur’an, and combine trust in Allah with helpful action. He reminded us that standing with oppressed people matters before Allah, even when we cannot yet see the results of our efforts.
- What could you say or do when someone uses a hurtful label for another person or group?
- What lesson from Musa’s story would you like our family to practice this week?
- How could we help someone who is being treated unfairly, even if we cannot fix everything?
