Honor your parents before regret arrives
“The older your parents get, the more that all they want is to be close to you.”
In one sentence
Muslims must honor and care for their parents, especially as they age, by maintaining connection, serving them, and praying for them because dutifulness to parents is a path to Allah’s forgiveness and Paradise.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Reframes the focus from parents’ mistakes to adult children’s duties toward living parents.
- Urges maintaining regular connection and companionship as parents age, grounded in Quran 17:23, 24.
- Calls for practical care beyond brief calls, while emphasizing the mother’s higher priority and the father’s importance.
- Encourages daily dua for living and deceased believing parents, including after their death.
- Warns of regret after parents die or when one becomes a parent, then closes with supplications.
Try this week
Maintain regular contact and companionship with parents, especially as they age.
Care for parents in concrete ways rather than limiting interaction to brief greetings.
Try to please both parents and give the mother special priority when choices conflict.
Make dua for parents every day, including after believing parents have died.
Examine the relationship now and repair neglect before regret arrives.
Sources the khateeb cited
Quran 17:23-24Used to prohibit showing irritation to elderly parents, command honorable speech and mercy, and teach prayer for them.
Quotes
In the khateeb's words
“Do your best to try to please both of them”
“the older your parents get the more that all they want is to be close to you”
“the one who has parents like this and he does not enter Jannah because of them they're your key to paradise”
Talk about it at home
For the dinner table
Allah asks us to treat our parents with respect, especially when they grow old. The khutbah reminds us to stay connected, speak gently, care for them in real ways, and make dua for them every day. Serving believing parents is described as a path to Jannah, and our responsibility to pray for them continues after they die. We should look honestly at our relationships now, before regret arrives.
- What is one small way we can make our parents or grandparents feel closer to us this week?
- When does helping a parent become more than just saying hi or bye?
- What dua could we make for our parents tonight?
