Honor parents every day, not once

“Every day of the year must be the Mother's Day.”

The khateeb, at 19:51

In one sentence

Islam grants mothers and parents a status unmatched by any other way of life, so children must honor them with excellence every day of the year, not just on Mother's Day.

The khutbah in 10 steps

  1. Opening praise and introduction: Mother's Day as an occasion to reflect on the status of mothers
  2. Even people without religion recognize parental sacrifice; Islam gives timeless guidance on honoring parents
  3. Quran pairs worship of Allah with kindness and ihsan to parents, with special focus on mothers' hardship
  4. The righteous child's dua: gratitude to Allah, righteousness, and prayers for parents and descendants
  5. Quranic commands: never say 'uff' to elderly parents, lower the wing of humility, pray for their mercy
  6. Hadith examples: serving one's mother is jihad; paradise lies under her feet; carrying her in tawaf cannot repay one moment of labor
  7. Critique of modern neglect: unanswered calls, one-word texts, careers over parents
  8. Mother's Day is acceptable only if it sparks year-round improvement, not a once-a-year token gift
  9. Practical duties for living, distant, and deceased parents: visits, calls, gifts, dua, sadaqah, ties with their relatives
  10. Closing duas and supplications
Try this week
Visit parents frequently if they live far away; do not use lack of vacation as an excuse
Call parents consistently and use video calls to communicate in a real-life manner
Respond properly to parents' calls and messages instead of dismissive one-word texts
Send gifts to parents frequently throughout the year, not only on Mother's Day
Humble yourself physically before parents, e.g., helping them with shoes and socks
Keep making dua for deceased parents at all times
Maintain relationships with deceased parents' relatives: siblings, uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces
Give sadaqah and charity on behalf of parents, asking Allah to accept it for them
Include gratitude for parents' blessings in every personal dua

Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

Today's khutbah reminded us that Islam gives mothers and fathers a status higher than any other religion or way of life. The Quran tells us to treat our parents with excellence, never to say even a small word of annoyance to them when they grow old, and to stay humble before them. The Prophet Muhammad taught that serving your mother is like jihad and that paradise lies under her feet. The khateeb warned that in our busy modern lives we often ignore our parents' calls and send them one-word texts while chasing careers. He said Mother's Day is only meaningful if it pushes us to be better children all year long, by visiting, calling, giving gifts, making dua, and giving charity for our parents even after they have passed away.

  1. What is one thing you could do this week to show your mom or dad the kind of respect the khutbah talked about?
  2. Why do you think the Prophet said paradise is under the mother's feet?
  3. If grandma or grandpa has passed away, what is something our family could still do for them?
