Worship should lead us to serve
“Whoever brings about ease for a person in hardship, Allah will make things easy for them in the dunya and the akhira.”
Sincere worship of Allah should naturally lead believers to serve their families, neighbors, and wider community, bringing divine mercy, help, and blessing.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Humans uniquely choose whether to worship and serve, carrying responsibility as khalifa on earth.
- The Prophet’s private life demonstrates serving family while prioritizing prayer and worship.
- Surah al-Ma'un links sincere worship with generosity, care for orphans, and basic help.
- Musa serves two women despite personal danger, illustrating service as a natural expression of faith.
- Listeners should serve family, maintain ties, and trust Allah’s blessing in wealth, time, and productivity.
- The masjid should become a refuge and source of support for Muslims and non-Muslims through service.
In the khateeb's words
“Human beings have the choice to be beneficial and useful or they have the choice to be useless.”
“In fact, they see the service of other people as being part of service to Allah Ta'ala.”
“and whoever brings about ease for a person in hardship, Allah will make things easy for them in the dunya and the akhira.”
“We want this place to be known as the place to go for support, for light, for guidance. for wisdom, for help. for community.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that worshipping Allah and caring for people belong together. The Prophet served his family at home, showing us that helping those closest to us is an important part of faith. Musa also helped two women water their animals even while he was facing his own worries. The imam encouraged us to help sincerely for Allah's sake, without waiting for thanks, and reminded us that Allah aids those who aid others. As a family and a community, we can care for our relatives and help make the masjid a welcoming place of support for Muslim and non-Muslim neighbors.
- What is one way you could help someone at home this week without being asked?
- How could you remind yourself why you are helping when nobody says thank you?
- What could we do to help a new person feel welcome at the masjid?
