Gratitude grows when blessings serve others

In one sentence

True gratitude to Allah embraces both blessings and hardship, and becomes real when we recognize what we have and use our gifts to help others.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Introduces the Quranic promise that gratitude brings increase.
  2. Reframes the promise through Musa and the Israelites enduring Pharaoh’s persecution and exile.
  3. Explains that gratitude and Allah’s increase are open-ended, communal, and not merely financial.
  4. Contrasts gratitude with heedlessness and highlights its spiritual and emotional benefits.
  5. Uses the prophetic example and suffering in Gaza to challenge complaints over minor problems.
  6. Gives practical ways to show gratitude by counting blessings and using knowledge, strength, and money to serve others.

For the dinner table

The khutbah teaches that gratitude is more than saying Alhamdulillah when life is easy. We should recognize blessings even during hardship, trusting Allah’s promise that thankfulness brings increase in ways we may not expect. The speaker asks us to notice ordinary gifts such as safety, food, health, family, and work, especially when others face war and loss. Gratitude becomes real when we use our strongest gifts, knowledge, strength, time, or money, to help others and seek Allah’s pleasure. This week, we can complain less, write down our blessings, and turn one of them into service.

  1. What is one blessing you usually overlook?
  2. How could you use one of your abilities to help someone this week?
  3. What helps you stay thankful when something difficult happens?
