Your life should serve the Muslim community

“How can the Muslim nation benefit from me right now?”

The khateeb, at 17:44

In one sentence

The Pledge of al-ʿAqaba makes every Muslim Allah’s vicegerent on earth, so a believer’s life must be oriented around serving the Muslim community wherever and however it is needed rather than around comfort, career, or locality.

The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. Introduction of Bayʿat al-ʿAqaba and the conditions of the pledge narrated by ʿUbadah ibn al-Sāmīt
  2. The purpose of creation: worship is the vision, but human beings alone are entrusted as Allah’s khalīfa on earth
  3. The life of ʿUbadah ibn al-Sāmīt as a case study, tribal leader turned teacher, judge, soldier, and negotiator
  4. The negotiation with al-Muqawqis and Islam’s rejection of racism in choosing a black representative
  5. The mission of Umm al-Harām, the Prophet’s dream of Muslim seafarers, and the Sahaba dying far from Mecca and Medina
  6. A direct call to the local community to stop living only for jobs or cities and to ask what the ummah needs now
  7. Concrete examples of service, voting drives, Sunday school, parking organization, and a closing appeal to renew the pledge
Try this week
Ask yourself how the Muslim nation can benefit from you this week
Volunteer for community needs such as Sunday school or parking organization even if you feel unqualified
Be willing to serve in whatever role is needed, teacher, judge, soldier, negotiator, voter-mobilizer
Do not reduce your purpose to a job title or city; actively seek your mission as Allah’s khalīfa

For the dinner table

The khutbah reminds us that Allah created us not only to worship Him, but also to serve as His khalifah on earth by carrying responsibility and bringing good. The pledge at al-Aqabah meant that faith should shape our choices, character, and daily service. Ubadah ibn al-Samit showed this by serving as a teacher, judge, soldier, and negotiator wherever the Muslim community needed him. His story also highlights that Islam values character over skin color and does not trade away justice for convenience. We can ask what our family and community need from us now, then take one practical step to help.

  1. What is one helpful thing you can do for our family this week?
  2. What talent or interest could you use to help someone else?
  3. How can we show through our actions that character matters more than appearances?
