Remember the Islamic calendar all year
“We have to remember this is our Islamic calendar.”
Muslims should keep their lives anchored in the Islamic calendar and complete Islamic practice, learn and value their history, and build brotherhood through concrete action while leaving outcomes to Allah.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Introduces taqwa and emphasizes remembering the Hijri calendar, Muharram, and the four sacred months.
- Explains Ashura, its connection to Musa, fasting practices, and the need for repentance for major sins.
- Argues that Muslims should value Islamic identity rather than copy others, using examples from dress, scholarship, and history.
- Reframes July 4 through Muslim history, Salah al-Din, Al-Aqsa, and the wider responsibility of the Ummah.
- Calls for local brotherhood through salam, shared meals, avoiding backbiting, and welcoming unfamiliar worshippers.
- Urges wholehearted submission to Islam and warns against selectively accepting religious teachings.
- Closes by encouraging historical awareness, unity, concrete effort, and trust in Allah’s results.
In the khateeb's words
“The first lesson from this, brothers and sisters, is we have to remember this is our Islamic calendar.”
“Islam is a package deal. Enter into Islam wholeheartedly. Submit.”
“Allah SWT doesn't ask you for victory. He doesn't ask you to win. He asks you to try. He asks you to work. He asks you to do something and leave the results with Allah SWT.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminds us that our Muslim identity includes the Hijri calendar, not only Ramadan, and that Muharram and Ashura carry special meaning. It teaches that worship should be paired with sincere repentance and wholehearted submission to Allah. The speaker also asks us to know our history and care about Al-Aqsa as part of a wider Ummah. At home and in the masjid, we can strengthen unity by greeting people we do not know, sharing meals, avoiding backbiting, and building real friendships. We should do what we can, then leave the results to Allah.
- Which Islamic month or historical event would you like to learn more about?
- Who at the masjid could we greet or get to know better?
- What is one good action we can take without worrying about the result?
