Use summer to grow closer to Allah

“This opportunity can make me a great Muslim, a great human being, or it can make me a very bad person, depending on how we use the summer.”

The khateeb, at 7:52

In one sentence

Summer break is a divinely granted opportunity that Muslims should use intentionally, through learning, character-building, prayer, physical health, and family bonding, to draw closer to Allah rather than waste it on idle distraction.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Open by framing summer as one of Allah's seasonal opportunities for drawing near to Him
  2. Contrast the common view of summer as pure leisure with the Muslim view of purposeful goal-setting
  3. Goal 1: pursue useful Islamic knowledge that removes doubt and strengthens conviction
  4. Goal 2: build character, break bad habits, and deepen one's relationship with the Qur'an
  5. Goal 3: guard the five daily prayers firmly, on time, and with understanding
  6. Redefine true freedom as liberation from every slavery except slavery to Allah
  7. Goal 4: strengthen the body through exercise and healthy eating for worship and service
  8. Close with exhortation to plan well and invest summer time in family bonds

For the dinner table

The khateeb reminded us that summer is a gift and an opportunity to grow, not simply a time to sleep, relax, or entertain ourselves. We can set goals for useful knowledge, better character, a stronger relationship with the Qur’an, and greater consistency in our five daily prayers. True freedom means freeing ourselves from unhealthy desires and living as devoted servants of Allah. We should also care for our bodies through healthy food, drinks, and exercise so we can worship Allah and serve others with strength. Summer can bring families closer when parents, children, and relatives intentionally spend meaningful time together.

  1. What is one good goal you would like to accomplish this summer?
  2. What helps you remember Allah when you have lots of free time?
  3. What family activity would make this summer more meaningful?
