Heedlessness weakens the ummah

“You cannot build your akhira if you're scrolling through someone else's dunya.”

The khateeb, at 13:06

In one sentence

The ummah's weakness stems not from small numbers but from ghafla (spiritual heedlessness and distraction), and strength is regained by restoring our relationship with Allah through reducing distractions, attending gatherings of dhikr, and centering life around Allah.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Opening question: how can the ummah regain its lost strength?
  2. The early ummah was strong despite tiny numbers (40 Muslims in 3 years, 313 at Badr), not because of them
  3. Their strength was ta'alluq, reliance on Allah, tahajjud, and commitment
  4. Diagnosis: our drift from Allah is caused by ghafla (heedlessness/distraction), shaitan's primary playbook
  5. Modern manifestations: phone addiction, doom-scrolling, eroded family bonds
  6. Treatment 1: intentionally reduce distractions as an act of ibadah (takhliyya)
  7. Treatment 2: stay in gatherings where Allah is remembered (gardens of paradise)
  8. Treatment 3: center your day around Allah and salah, not the reverse; closing recap and dua
Try this week
Intentionally reduce distractions as an act of worship: delete time-consuming social media apps, stop doom-scrolling, leave the phone behind when going to the masjid
Make distraction-reduction a family effort, e.g. everyone puts phones in a box at dinner
Attend local gatherings of dhikr, classes, and halaqas even if you've heard the reminder before
Schedule the day around the five prayers (Fajr first) rather than fitting salah into a busy schedule
Sources the khateeb cited
Surah 73Tahajjud was obligatory for the first year, evidence of the early Muslims' spiritual strength
Quran 21:1Names ghafla (heedlessness) as the disease that turns people away from accountability
Quran 58:19Shaitan's playbook: hijack a person and make them forget Allah, after which sin becomes easy
Quran 18:28Command to stay with people who remember Allah morning and evening

For the dinner table

Today the khateeb asked a big question: how can our ummah become strong again? He reminded us that the first Muslims were strong even when they were tiny in number, only forty people after three years, because their hearts were connected to Allah through night prayer and trust in Him. He explained that our weakness comes from ghafla, a kind of spiritual forgetfulness, where constant distraction on our phones and devices slowly pulls us away from Allah without us noticing. Shaitan's trick, he said, is not to make us do bad things first, but simply to make us forget Allah, and then everything else becomes easy. He gave three cures: cut down distractions on purpose as a family, spend time in gatherings where Allah is remembered, and plan our day around prayer instead of fitting prayer into leftovers. He ended with a beautiful hadith: the difference between the one who remembers Allah and the one who doesn't is like the difference between the living and the dead.

  1. The khateeb said at dinner everyone should put their phone in a box, how would our family do if we tried that this week?
  2. If the early Muslims were strong with only forty people, what do you think real strength looks like for someone your age?
  3. What's one thing you reach for on your phone that you could swap for two minutes of remembering Allah?
