Mercy demands action against oppression
“We must be aware of what is happening to our brothers and sisters.”
Believers must combine mercy with justice by resisting oppression, supporting Gaza, rejecting indifference, and maintaining hope and obedience to Allah.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Allah's justice, mercy, balance, and prohibition of oppression are introduced.
- The Prophet Muhammad is presented as both merciful and firmly just, opposing racism and discrimination.
- The Prophet's truthfulness and the steadfastness of his followers are illustrated through Heraclius's questioning of Abu Sufyan.
- The Meccan boycott of Banu Hashim and Banu Muttalib is connected to the blockade and suffering in Gaza.
- Believers are urged to recognize evil, speak against oppression, make dua, and resist indifference.
- The khutbah closes by warning against despair and praying for relief for Gaza and other oppressed communities.
In the khateeb's words
“Part of rahmah is to be just. Because sometimes, to bring compassion to the rest of the world, you have to deal and punish the few that are wicked and evil.”
“We must be aware of what is happening to our brothers and sisters. And our hearts must be with them. And our words should always speak in their defense.”
“Indifference is a sin. It is a major sin to not be concerned or to accept it as it is and not be concerned and not bothered by it.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that Allah wants us to be merciful and just, because true mercy includes standing against oppression. The Prophet Muhammad showed this through his opposition to racism, discrimination, and wrongdoing. The speaker connected the historical boycott of the Prophet's family in Mecca with the suffering caused by the blockade of Gaza. He urged Muslims to stay aware, speak against cruelty, make dua, and refuse to become indifferent. At the same time, believers should keep hope in Allah and continue fulfilling their responsibilities.
- What does it mean to care about people far away without becoming hopeless?
- How can we use our words to stand against unfairness this week?
- What is one dua we can make for people facing oppression?
