Prepare for the Day of Judgment
“We plan so meticulously but where is the preparation for the day of judgment?”
Death is inevitable and the Day of Judgment is terrifyingly real, so the only way to prepare is to flee to Allah through taqwa, good deeds, avoiding harm to others, and sincere tawbah.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Opening: the ignored elephant in the room is inevitable death, but the Quran points to something beyond death to truly fear
- Vivid Quranic descriptions of the Day of Judgment: 50,000 years long, nursing mothers dropping infants, children turning grey, everyone fleeing family
- Knowing about that day is itself a mercy from Allah, so we must prepare for it
- The only escape from Allah is to flee to Allah; preparation means taqwa like we prepare meticulously for travel
- Every soul will be paid in full: every word, penny, smile, and harm is recorded and nothing is forgotten
- The hadith of the bankrupt person (muflis): mountains of worship erased by harming people
- The solution is tawbah and returning to Allah
- Announcement for the Ottawa Muslim Cemetery expansion fundraiser and conference
In the khateeb's words
“everything you're afraid of you flee from except Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala when you're afraid of Him you flee to Him”
“we plan so meticulously but where is the preparation for the day of judgment”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that death is the thing nobody wants to talk about, but the Quran warns of something even bigger beyond it: the Day of Judgment. The imam described that day in vivid detail, so terrifying that nursing mothers drop their babies and everyone runs from their own family, each person crying 'myself, myself.' But he also said that knowing about this day is a gift from Allah, because it gives us time to prepare, and the only way to escape Allah's punishment is to run toward Allah, not away. He warned with a hadith that even someone with mountains of prayers and charity can end up bankrupt on that day if they hurt or wronged other people. The good news he left us with: the solution is simple, repent, return to Allah, do good, and treat people well.
- The imam said we prepare so carefully for trips but what about the Day of Judgment, what's one thing you could 'pack' this week?
- He said knowing about that day is actually a mercy from Allah, why do you think that is?
- The 'bankrupt person' had lots of worship but lost it all by hurting people, what's one way we can treat people better this week?
