Let Allah's guidance shape family life

“Honor the food that Allah provided you with, and honor the time that you have to spend with your family.”

The khateeb, at 9:16

The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. Allah's guidance and the Prophet's example should shape character at home, in the masjid, and in society.
  2. Believers must protect themselves and their families while balancing worship, work, marriage, parenting, and family presence.
  3. Listeners should value youth, health, wealth, free time, and life before they pass.
  4. Family guidance requires example, mercy, private correction, practical effort, and dua rather than humiliation or force.
  5. Prophetic teachings frame household roles as responsibility and care, not manipulation or domination.
  6. Examples of Abu Talib, the wives of Noah and Lot, and the wife of Pharaoh illustrate the limits of human guidance and the strength of personal faith.
  7. The khutbah closes by identifying obedience to Allah and His Messenger as ultimate success and praying for protection and grieving communities.

Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

The khutbah reminds us that Allah who sees us in the masjid also sees how we treat people at home. We should protect our families by living with good example, gentle correction, and sincere dua. Time with family matters, so we should put away distractions and be present, especially during meals. We should use our health, time, wealth, and opportunities before they disappear. Our job is to teach and care with mercy, while remembering that Allah alone opens people's hearts.

  1. What would help us be more present and peaceful during one family meal this week?
  2. Which good opportunity in your life do you want to use before it passes?
  3. How can we correct someone without embarrassing or discouraging them?
