Patience and prayer bring Allah's help

“Believer cannot be a liar; believer cannot be dishonest.”

The khateeb, at 2:52

In one sentence

Allah's help and companionship (ma'iyyat) are attained only through both patience (sabr) and prayer (salah) together, and fulfilling these along with zakat, congregational prayer, and honesty separates the true believer from the disbeliever and the hypocrite.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Opening on Surah al-Baqarah: seek Allah's help through sabr and salah
  2. Three types of people: those who neglect both, those who pray without patience/character, and those who do both
  3. Signs of the hypocrite: lying, breaking promises, betraying trusts, abusing others in anger
  4. Command to establish prayer, give zakat, and bow with those who bow, congregational prayer as a command to all prophets
  5. Hadith of 40 days of prayer without missing takbir ula, earning deliverance from Hellfire and hypocrisy
  6. Warning about neglecting zakat and consuming riba; punishments in the grave and akhirah
  7. Urdu section: sabr an al-ma'siyah and sabr ala al-ta'at (patience from sin and in obedience, e.g., tahajjud)
  8. Reminder of death, closing duas, and 'no prayer without presence of the heart'
Try this week
Pray all five daily prayers with the congregation (jamaat), striving not to miss the first takbir, aiming for 40 consecutive days
Give zakat properly and avoid riba (interest)
Practice sabr an al-ma'siyah: restrain yourself from sins, especially youthful temptations
Practice sabr ala al-ta'at: push yourself into obedience, e.g., leaving bed for tahajjud or praying Isha when tired
Eliminate hypocrite traits: never lie, keep promises, honor trusts (amanah), and control abusive language in anger
Sources the khateeb cited
Quran 2:45Foundation of the entire khutbah: Allah's help and ma'iyyat require both sabr and salah together
Quran 2:43Used to argue prayer must be with congregation (jamaat) and that zakat fulfills rights of creation
Sahih al-BukhariLying, breaking promises, betraying trusts, and foul language in anger mark the munafiq even if he prays five times daily

For the dinner table

Today the khateeb reminded us of Allah's command in Surah al-Baqarah: seek His help through patience and through prayer. He explained that people fall into three groups, those who neglect both, those who pray but have no patience or good character, and those beloved to Allah who hold onto both, and about them Allah says He is with the patient. He warned that praying five times a day is not enough if a person lies, breaks promises, betrays trusts, or mistreats people in anger, those are signs of hypocrisy, and a believer can make mistakes but cannot be a liar. He also shared the beautiful promise that whoever prays forty days in congregation without missing the first takbeer earns two gifts: freedom from hellfire and freedom from hypocrisy. And he left us with a sobering reminder: regret over sins erases them, but pride over good deeds can erase the good deeds, so we ask Allah for humble, sincere hearts.

  1. The khateeb said Allah is with the patient, what's one situation this week where you found it really hard to be patient?
  2. If praying but lying or breaking promises makes someone a hypocrite, what's one small habit you could fix to make your character match your prayers?
  3. Would you take the forty-day challenge of not missing the first takbeer in congregation, what would make that hard or easy for you?
