Thank Allah for everyday blessings

“You get used to the ni'mah of Allah.”

The khateeb, at 4:27

In one sentence

Becoming accustomed to Allah's countless blessings without feeling or expressing gratitude is a hidden disease of the heart, so believers must consciously thank Allah for every visible and invisible favor.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Arabic opening: praise of Allah and the two obligations of every khutbah, taqwa/dhikr and salawat on the Prophet (Surah al-Ahzab)
  2. Thesis: habitual enjoyment of blessings without saying alhamdulillah is an invisible heart disease Allah dislikes
  3. Surah Ibrahim: Allah's favors cannot be counted, so gratitude must be renewed daily
  4. Everyday examples: breathing, sight, hands, house, car, children, food and digestion as favors deserving thanks
  5. The Prophet's morning dua upon waking, contrasted with people who grab their phones first
  6. Hadith: whoever wakes safe, healthy, and with a day's food owns the whole world; the Prophet's household went months without cooking yet praised Allah
  7. Second part: a scholar's saying that what suffices you should content you; reflection exercises (holding one's nose, closing one's eyes) to feel the value of blessings
  8. Shaytan makes people see only what they lack; Surah ad-Duha and the promise 'if you are grateful I will increase you'; closing duas
Try this week
Say alhamdulillah consciously for everyday favors: upon waking, before driving, on returning home to a healthy family, and when seeing your children
Say bismillah before eating and alhamdulillah after, thanking Allah for the ability to swallow and digest food
Practice reflection exercises (hold your nose briefly, close your eyes for five minutes) to feel the value of blessings you take for granted
Remember the sick and hospitalized who appreciate health, and let your own hamd come from the heart
