Sincere effort matters more than visible results
“You will be rewarded for the effort even though you may not see the result.”
Muslims should continually progress from inherited or struggling faith toward deeper knowledge, worship, service, and ihsan, measuring success by sincere effort rather than visible results.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces seven levels of Muslim practice and spiritual development.
- Describes levels one through three, from inherited identity to recurring struggle with sin.
- Defines level four as the baseline of obligatory worship, not the spiritual ceiling.
- Explains devoted, inspiring, and exemplary Muslims as increasingly focused on teaching and serving others.
- Urges listeners to advance through learning prayer meanings, improving worship, volunteering, and serving the community.
- Closes with supplication, emphasizing that Allah rewards sincere effort even without immediate results.
In the khateeb's words
“You don't build a house at level three. You don't want to be at level three.”
“And so the five pillars are the foundation. And what is the foundation? It's the baseline.”
“Faith is not about you. It's not about you. It's about others.”
“But with Allah, with Allah, it's not the result. It's the effort. The effort that you make, you will be rewarded for the effort even though you may not see the result.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah invited us to look honestly at ourselves and keep growing closer to Allah. The khateeb described seven levels as a way to reflect on our own practice and encouraged us not to become content with standing still. He reminded us that the five pillars are our foundation and urged us to learn what we are saying in prayer so we can connect more deeply with Allah. He also encouraged us to help others, volunteer sincerely, and remember that Allah sees us. His closing encouragement was that our effort matters, even when we do not yet see the results.
- Which words from salah would you like us to learn the meaning of together?
- What is one way our family could help someone this week?
- What helps you keep trying when a good habit feels difficult?
