Protect Islam without compromising its truth
“We are kind to one another, and respectful to one another.”
The khutbah argues that Muslims must preserve Islam's defining beliefs and boundaries while treating others justly and teaching with care rather than diluting the faith or hastily declaring individuals outside it.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Argues that prophets did not compromise on core truths even when common ground existed.
- Warns that reducing Islam to shared ethics weakens its distinct identity and miseducates future generations.
- Introduces five nullifiers of Islam, beginning with shirk and rejecting clear Qur'anic teachings.
- Distinguishes respecting people and religious freedom from declaring all religions equally true.
- Warns against mocking Allah, the Messenger, or religion, and against siding with enemies of Islam while affirming justice for oppressed non-Muslims.
- Closes by urging protection of iman and teaching rather than labeling individuals as disbelievers.
In the khateeb's words
“That could be in worshipping other than Allah, praying to other than Allah, making dua to other than Allah.”
“We don't have to understand everything. We don't have to comprehend everything. But safeguarding our Islam is essential.”
“But we say, we are neighbors, we are friends, we are co-workers. So we are kind to one another, and respectful to one another. Whilst recognizing the difference between truth and falsehood.”
“We are not judges, but we are teachers. We are not judges with the authority to put things right by force, but we're teachers.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that Islam has defining beliefs and practices that Muslims should protect and understand. It warns against shirk, rejecting clear Qur'anic teachings, treating all religions as equally true, mocking religion, and siding with those fighting Islam. At the same time, Muslims should be kind and fair to people of other faiths and stand against oppression, whoever suffers from it. We should teach and gently warn others rather than quickly calling individuals disbelievers.
- How can we be respectful toward people with different beliefs while staying clear about our own faith?
- What is the difference between correcting someone and judging them?
- What kinds of jokes or online posts might cross the boundaries mentioned in the khutbah?
