The Prophet loved us but feared dunya

ICPC Paterson · Zaied

“I fear for you that you will vie with one another and compete with one another in greed over this dunya.”

The khateeb, at 4:59

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Opening taqwa reminder built on the verse 'ittaqu Allah haqqa tuqatih'
  2. The Prophet's farewell visit to the martyrs of Uhud and his minbar sermon: 'I do not fear shirk for you, I fear you competing over the dunya'
  3. Evidence of his love and loyalty: forgiving Hatib for Badr's sake, defending Abu Bakr, weeping over Khadija years after her death
  4. He longs to see 'my brothers' who believe without seeing him, and their deeds are shown to him in the grave
  5. 'You will be with those whom you love' and the companions' own longing (Abu Hurayrah tying stones on his stomach)
  6. Surah al-Kawthir, the Hawd, and the marks of wudu by which he will recognize his ummah
  7. Why shirk was no longer a danger (Tawheed entering hearts; Heraclius and Abu Sufyan) versus the allure of dunya (Surah al-Takathur theme)
  8. Every blessing will be asked about; see blessings as trusts and hardships as tests; closing dua including Palestine and Sudan
