Turn every day into worship

“When you show mercy to others because you want Allah to have mercy on you.”

The khateeb, at 16:20

In one sentence

A true believer can live all 24 hours of the day in worship, not just the hour of salah, by avoiding the haram and doubtful matters, turning permissible actions into worship through intention, choosing the harder path, and treating people with the mercy you want from Allah.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Opening praise of Allah and verses of taqwa, plus a reminder that the khutbah is part of the prayer so phones must be put away
  2. Hadith of the fifty: in later times holding to Islam is like holding fire, and the steadfast earn the reward of fifty companions
  3. Contrast with Medina: a companion's whole day was spent among righteous people like Abu Bakr, Zubayr, Ali, and Umar
  4. Goal: be a slave to Allah all 24 hours, not only during the salah, and read the Quran by Allah's guidance rather than by desire
  5. Rule one from the hadith: the halal is clear, the haram is clear, and between them are doubtful matters, stay away from the doubtful
  6. Rule two: turn the permissible acts that fill most of the day (sleep, work, gym) into worship by making intention before each act
  7. Rule three: take yourself with the strong option (azima) not the easy concession, climbing the Quran's four levels of action from doing to earning
  8. Rules of dealing with people: want for your brother what you want for yourself, and treat people with the mercy you hope Allah shows you, closing with the story of Musa and hope of joining the companions in Jannah
Try this week
Do not use your phone during the khutbah, since it is part of the Jumu'ah prayer
Perform the clear halal as much as you can and stay strictly away from the clear haram
Avoid doubtful matters until it becomes clear they are halal, rather than walking close to the boundary
Make a conscious intention before permissible acts, sleeping, working, going to the gym, to turn them into worship
When choosing for yourself, take the stronger, harder option rather than the easy concession to train yourself
Treat people the way you want to be treated, and with the mercy you want Allah to show you
Sources the khateeb cited
Surah 53Reading the Quran by revelation rather than personal desire marks the level of true submission
