A ceasefire does not end our duty
“In order for me to rectify the world rectification has to begin with myself.”
The Gaza ceasefire should bring gratitude but not end Muslim responsibility: believers must continue supporting the oppressed while pursuing personal reform through patience, worship, and gratitude.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Recounts Abu Jandal's painful return to Makkah after Hudaybiyyah and the Prophet's promise of patience and relief.
- Connects that apparent setback to the Gaza ceasefire, warning listeners not to treat it as the end of their support.
- Extends concern to oppressed Muslims in Gaza, Sudan, and elsewhere, including the difficult rebuilding still ahead.
- Turns inward by asking whether the crisis increased personal gratitude, worship, and resistance to sin.
- Concludes that gratitude for safety should become visible worship, while making dua for the oppressed and deceased.
In the khateeb's words
“our goal for all of the things that we have done for the past two years was not to get to this point and become happy and say, khalas, our job is done.”
“Have sabah. Allah will make a way out for you.”
“the first fitna that you have to worry about is the fitna that you are in yourself”
“in order for me to rectify the world rectification has to begin with myself”
For the dinner table
The khutbah used the story of Abu Jandal at Hudaybiyyah to show that a painful setback can still be part of Allah's plan for relief. The ceasefire in Gaza is a reason for gratitude, but it is not a reason to stop caring about Gaza, Sudan, or other oppressed Muslims. We were asked to keep our support and boycotts meaningful while remembering that the past two years should also change our own relationship with Allah. Real gratitude for safety means turning to worship, leaving sin, and making dua for those who are suffering and those who have died.
- What is one good thing you can do when a hard situation does not change immediately?
- How can our family show care for people who are suffering far away?
- What blessing can we thank Allah for through our actions this week?
