Death & the hereafterFrom the masjid's own video, Jul 18, 2026.

Small good deeds never go to waste

“Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala never lets a good deed go to waste.”

The khateeb, at 1:05

In one sentence

Because life is short, death is certain, and every deed is recorded, believers should pursue the best (not merely the most) deeds, small, sincere, consistent acts done for Allah and according to the Sunnah, which Allah rewards with a good life in this world and success in the hereafter.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Opening reminder from Surah al-Mulk: Allah created life and death to test who does the best deeds, not the most deeds
  2. Death is certain and every deed, good or bad, is recorded; good deeds benefit only the doer, not Allah
  3. Never underestimate any good deed, from smiling at a brother to charity and salah
  4. Allah promises a good, peaceful life (hayatan tayyibah) to believing men and women who do righteousness, per Ibn Kathir's tafsir
  5. Contentment with what Allah gives, health, wealth, is true success; never complain, say alhamdulillah
  6. Two conditions for deeds to be accepted: sincerity for Allah alone and following the way of the Prophet
  7. Catalog of righteous deeds: acts of the heart (love of Allah, patience, fear, seeking forgiveness) and acts of the limbs (dhikr, salah, charity, enjoining good, serving parents, relatives, orphans, neighbors)
  8. The most beloved deeds to Allah are the most consistent, even if small; closing dua that Allah grants tawfiq to act on this
Try this week
Never underestimate small good deeds, smile at your brother, help others, give charity, pray
Stop complaining about what you lack; say alhamdulillah wa shukru lillah and be content with what Allah has given
Ensure every deed meets two conditions: done sincerely for Allah and done as prescribed by the Prophet
Do small deeds consistently rather than one large deed occasionally; engage in regular dhikr (subhanallah, alhamdulillah, allahu akbar)
Serve your parents, stay in touch with relatives, and help orphans, the poor, travelers, and both near and far neighbors
Enjoin good and forbid evil; live according to the Quran and Sunnah

For the dinner table

The khateeb reminded us that life is short, death is certain, and every deed we do is recorded by Allah. He explained that Allah looks at the quality of our deeds, not just how many we do, and that even small kindnesses like smiling at someone or helping a neighbor are never wasted. Good deeds are not for Allah's need, but for our own benefit in this life and the next. When we live by the Quran and Sunnah with sincere intention, Allah promises us a peaceful, blessed life. The most beloved deeds are the small ones done consistently, so we should aim for steadiness rather than one big effort.

  1. What is one small good deed you did today?
  2. How can we help each other remember Allah more consistently this week?
  3. What does it mean to do your best instead of doing the most?
