Follow the Prophet beyond your desires
“We have to check ourselves if our desires follow the footsteps of the Prophet.”
Paradise, Allah's love, forgiveness, and guidance come through sincerely obeying Allah and following the Prophet Muhammad's Sunnah rather than one's desires.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Humanity and jinn were created to worship Allah, who alone provides for creation.
- Because people naturally follow their desires, Allah sent prophets to guide them along His path.
- Belief in Muhammad's prophethood requires following the Qur'an and Sunnah, obeying commands, avoiding prohibitions, and rejecting religious innovations.
- Following the Prophet brings Allah's love, forgiveness, guidance, and entry into Paradise, while disobedience amounts to refusing it.
- The examples of Umar and the companion with the gold ring illustrate careful obedience to the Prophet.
- The khutbah closes with prayers for guidance, good character, protection, and oppressed communities in Gaza, Palestine, Lebanon, and elsewhere.
In the khateeb's words
“we have to check ourselves if our desires follow the footsteps of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam or not”
“the true believers whenever they hear something that is coming from Allah and His Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam they have to follow it right away”
For the dinner table
The khateeb says we were created to worship Allah, not to let every desire steer our lives. Allah sent prophets, including Muhammad, to show us how to worship and live rightly. Following the Prophet's Sunnah means obeying his guidance, avoiding what he prohibited, and checking that our religious actions are not inventions. The khutbah teaches that this obedience brings Allah's love, forgiveness, guidance, and Paradise. It ends by asking Allah to guide us and support oppressed people in Gaza, Palestine, Lebanon, and elsewhere.
- What is one desire you could place under Allah's guidance this week?
- What habit of the Prophet would you like to learn more about and follow?
- How can we tell whether an action is truly part of the Sunnah?
