Valid differences require humility and kindness
“Hold on to my sunnah and the sunnah of the Khulafa.”
Muslims should handle valid religious differences with knowledge, humility, restraint, and kindness rather than turning minor variations into community conflict.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- A story about a finger being broken during prayer illustrates how religious rigidity can become harmful.
- The Banu Qurayza incident shows that sincere companions could interpret one prophetic instruction differently, with both approaches accepted.
- The khutbah distinguishes major obligations from minor Sunnah variations and criticizes unsupported cultural judgments.
- Examples from Imam Malik and Imam al-Shafi'i show that deeper knowledge should produce flexibility and humility.
- The speaker identifies ego, ignorance, jealousy, and showing off as sources of destructive disagreement.
- Listeners are told to learn their religion, avoid arguments, follow trustworthy scholars, include others, avoid unnecessary controversy, and speak gently.
In the khateeb's words
“Il libro della flessibilità. Il tuo Sharia è flessibile. Hai le opzioni, hai l'opinione”
“Follow my sunnah, adhere, hold on to my sunnah and the sunnah of the Khulafa”
“Anche se sai che sei giusto. Tutti quelli che arguono sanno che hanno ragione.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that Muslims can sincerely follow different valid opinions within the Sunnah. The story of Banu Qurayza showed that the Prophet accepted two sincere readings of his instruction, while examples of prayer styles showed why minor differences should not divide the community. We were encouraged to learn our religion, stay humble about what we do not know, avoid arguments and controversy, and follow a trustworthy scholar. We should include people who practice valid differences and speak gently, keeping our hearts focused on Allah and on one another.
- What is one small disagreement that is not worth fighting about?
- How can you be kind when another Muslim family prays differently from you?
- What does it mean to be humble about what you do not know?
