Shura can break the cycle of dictatorship
“Mosque is supposed to be a base from which you go out and you engage the society and you reform it and you improve it.”
Muslims can escape dictatorship and religious distortion by deepening taqwa, recovering an honest understanding of their faith, history, and reality, and building participatory shura-based institutions.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines taqwa as a lifelong process of increasing mindfulness of Allah.
- Frames the sermon series around understanding the deen, Muslim history, and present reality.
- Diagnoses cycles of weak institutions, dictatorship, revolt, chaos, and renewed dictatorship in Muslim history.
- Presents shura and democracy at every level as the long-term remedy.
- Explains how dictatorship promotes ignorance, suppresses critical thinking, freezes ijtihad, and distorts religious priorities.
- Urges listeners to study more and rebuild Muslim life on solid foundations.
In the khateeb's words
“Mosque is supposed to be a base from which you go out and you engage the society and you reform it and you improve it.”
“Anybody who is affected by the decision should participate in it.”
“You can't fix a problem that is 13 centuries old with a quick solution or easy solution.”
“Power corrupts people. So unless there is check and balance, people will have, will tend to have absolute, absolute power.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that taqwa is a lifelong effort to stay mindful of Allah, not a finish line we reach once. The speaker said that understanding our faith, our history, and our present reality helps us see problems clearly and act wisely. He warned that dictatorship harms both people and religious life by encouraging ignorance and silencing justice, creativity, and independent thought. He encouraged shura, giving people a voice in decisions, from the family level upward, and rejecting the fantasy of a perfect savior. We can begin by learning more, discussing decisions fairly, and serving the wider society through our mosque.
- What is one decision our family could make with everyone’s voice included?
- How can our mosque help people outside its walls?
- What is one thing you would like to learn more about in Islam or Muslim history?
