Praise Allah in every condition
“Whenever something good happens, we always realign our focus towards Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
Because worldly life alternates between ease and hardship, believers should praise Allah in every condition, seek well-being rather than trials, respond to suffering with patience, and show gratitude by abandoning sin and strengthening mosque-based worship.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Contrasts the mixed conditions of worldly life with the everlasting outcomes of the Hereafter.
- Explains how to praise Allah during blessings and difficulties, using the Prophet’s humility at the conquest of Mecca and his supplication for well-being.
- Connects suffering in Syria to the Prophet’s trials, the persecution of the Yasir family, and the hardships faced by early Muslims.
- Uses the Prophet’s experience at Ta’if to teach contentment with Allah’s pleasure despite pain, while remembering suffering in Gaza and Syria.
- Calls listeners to make their jihad avoiding sin, attend mosque prayers including Fajr, and deepen their connection to religious knowledge.
In the khateeb's words
“And we see that whenever something good happens, we always realign our focus towards Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“So we should never ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala for difficulty upon us. Rather, we should ask Him for well-being, for comfort, for good health.”
“If you are not angry with me, while I am being stoned, while I am being chased out and disgraced in Ta'if, if you are not angry with me, then I am fine.”
“And our Jihad, our Jihad is staying away from sin. That how can I stay away from sin?”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that life brings both happy and difficult days, and we can turn to Allah in both. When good things happen, we should thank Allah and remain humble, remembering the Prophet’s example when he returned to Mecca. We should ask Allah for well-being and seek His help to be patient when difficulties come. The khateeb reflected on the Prophet’s hardships and the suffering of people facing persecution, encouraging hope in Allah and reflection on our own lives. He urged us to leave sinful habits, value the freedom to pray safely, and grow closer to Allah through prayer and the masjid.
- What is one good thing from this week that you want to thank Allah for?
- What could you do to help someone feel less alone on a hard day?
- What is one small step our family could take to make prayer a more regular part of our day?
