Gratitude turns daily blessings into contentment
“When you wake up on a daily basis, just write 10 things that you are thankful for.”
The khutbah argues that recognizing and expressing gratitude for everyday blessings cultivates contentment, invites further blessing, and should become a daily practice.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Presents gratitude as a guaranteed path to increased blessings.
- Uses research and bodily examples to reveal overlooked blessings.
- Applies a hadith about safety, health, and food to ordinary life.
- Tells a story about hunger, hospitality, accountability, and caring for caretakers.
- Connects al-Fatihah and the coming new year to increasing daily praise.
- Uses a film about paralysis to reframe ordinary abilities as blessings.
- Closes by urging listeners to become consistently grateful servants of Allah.
In the khateeb's words
“when you wake up on a daily basis just write 10 things that you are thankful for just remind yourself of 10 things everyday that you are thankful for”
“the caretakers usually are the ones that no one cares for are usually the forgotten ones the fathers of the home nobody asks the father if he needs anything”
“we just showed you 7 minutes of this person's life aren't you thankful enough?”
“isn't it time that we start incorporating the words Alhamdulillahi Rabbil Alameen more and more on our daily basis?”
For the dinner table
This khutbah reminded us to notice Allah’s blessings and say Alhamdulillah with greater attention. The khateeb pointed to gifts we can easily overlook, such as our faith, the ways our bodies work, a safe home, and food for the day. He suggested remembering ten things we are thankful for each morning. He also reminded us to care for the people who care for us, including mothers and fathers whose needs may go unnoticed. Through the story of the Prophet, Abu Bakr, and Umar receiving a meal when they were hungry, he connected gratitude with our responsibility for the blessings we receive. He encouraged us to begin the new year with a daily commitment to thanking Allah for both little and major blessings.
- What is one everyday blessing you noticed today that you usually overlook?
- Who took care of you today, and how could you care for them in return?
- What could help us remember to say Alhamdulillah thoughtfully each day?
