Allah's protection depends on Muslim unity
“We want Allah to save us like Musa alayhi wa sallam and his followers.”
Allah's help and safety reach the Ummah only when Muslims rebuild the unity shown by Musa's followers by practicing the six foundational rights of brotherhood taught by the Prophet.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Remembrance of Ashura: fasting, Allah saving Musa and Bani Israel from Fir'aun, and the martyrdom of Hussain at Karbala
- Reflection on Surah al-Shu'ara 65: Musa's followers were saved together as a united congregation
- The question facing the Ummah today: will we be united like them, or forfeit Allah's protection?
- Returning to basics: the six rights every Muslim owes to fellow Muslims
- First right: greet Muslims with salam and do not turn away
- Second right: accept lawful invitations to weddings, celebrations, and dinners
- Third right: give sincere advice or good words when asked
- Fourth through sixth rights: respond to sneezes with a dua, visit the sick, and attend funerals and burials
In the khateeb's words
“We want Allah to save us like Musa alayhi wa sallam and his followers. We want Allah to bless our jama'ah, our nation, our ummah.”
“If you make the decision not to be part of this ummah and not to be united under the belief of Allah and the following of Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, there is no safety for you in this world or the hereafter.”
“But if you don't do these six things, how can you call yourself a jama'ah? How can you call yourself the Ummah of Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam?”
For the dinner table
The khutbah remembered Ashura, when Allah saved Musa and his followers from Fir'aun, and also remembered the martyrdom of the Prophet’s beloved grandson Hussain. The khateeb emphasized that Musa’s followers were saved together as a community united by faith. He reminded us that Muslim unity begins with simple responsibilities toward one another, including giving salam, accepting invitations, offering sincere advice, responding to a sneeze, visiting the sick, and attending funerals. These actions help us show care even toward people who are not our close friends. Our families can help strengthen the ummah by practicing these small acts sincerely and consistently.
- Which simple act of kindness from the khutbah could you practice this week?
- How can you show respect to a Muslim you do not know very well?
- What helps a group stay united when its members disagree?
