Use winter to strengthen worship and community

“I have the freedom to act.”

The khateeb, at 12:16

In one sentence

Because Allah’s justice requires resurrection and human freedom makes accountability meaningful, believers should use winter’s altered rhythm to strengthen worship, physical health, and social connection.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Introduces resurrection as the final theological principle and reviews divine justice as proof of the afterlife.
  2. Distinguishes worldly cause-and-effect from final recompense, explaining that present outcomes are tests.
  3. Explains how freedom produces responsibility, accountability, and ultimately the need for resurrection.
  4. Connects winter’s shorter days and longer nights with protecting prayer and spiritual routines.
  5. Recommends fasting, Qur’an, extra dua, physical activity, better sleep, and reduced screen time.
  6. Encourages mosque attendance and checking on others, ending with a challenge to add one spiritual, physical, and social practice.

Use winter’s longer nights and shorter days for extra Qur’an, dua, night prayer, and fasting.
Stay physically active indoors, reduce television and phone use, and get good sleep.
Continue attending the mosque and check on people who are absent by visiting or calling them.

For the dinner table

Today's khutbah explained that Allah's perfect justice is one reason we know there must be a life after death. In this world, some people who do wrong and some people who are innocent both live and die without getting what they deserve, so Allah will set everything right in the hereafter. The Sheikh reminded us that this world is not where we get our final reward. The good and hard things that happen to us are tests, and what Allah has saved for us is far better than anything others seem to enjoy here. He also explained that we are free to choose, so when we pray, fast, or wear hijab, we can say proudly, 'I choose to do this for Allah.' In the second part, he reminded us that winter is the believer's spring, with long nights for worship and short days for fasting, and he encouraged each of us to add just one good habit for our faith, our health, and our friendships this season.

  1. If someone at school asked why you pray or fast, how would you explain that you choose to do it?
  2. What is one small good thing you could add to your routine this winter, now that the nights are longer?
  3. Why do you think Allah gives some people lots of money and toys as a test instead of a reward?
