The khateeb taught that Islam does not erase culture; it filters culture through Islamic principles and beautifies the good in people’s languages, foods, clothing, and histories. Muslims are not ranked by ethnicity or traditional dress, but by taqwa. In American Muslim communities, converts and less-represented groups should be welcomed as equal contributors. As Eid approaches, we should notice who may be alone and invite them directly to share a meal or celebration. Friday is also a chance to show attachment to faith through early attendance, Surah Al-Kahf, and good clothing.
