A righteous home is built on faith

“Do not turn your homes into graveyards.”

The khateeb, at 13:25

In one sentence

A truly righteous Muslim home is built on iman, taqwa, salah, Qur'an, good character, guarding against harmful influences, and deliberate upbringing of children, not on material furnishings or modern conveniences.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Opening: the greatest blessing is a righteous home filled with iman, mercy, and dhikr, not wealth or status
  2. Diagnosis: modern homes are furnished and Wi-Fi-connected but spiritually empty, no sujood, no Qur'an
  3. Step 1: build the home on taqwa and obedience to Allah (Surah ar-Rum, Surah at-Tahrim)
  4. Step 2: make salah the heart of the home; a home without prayer is like a graveyard; children learn by watching parents pray
  5. Step 3: fill the home with Qur'an daily, not just in Ramadan or at funerals
  6. Step 4: cultivate good character, forgiveness, and smiling within the family
  7. Steps 5-6: guard the home's 'doors' (screens) from harmful influences; teach children deen from day one, home is the first madrasa
  8. Final principle: eat together as a family in one place; closing dua, then community announcements
Try this week
Establish the mandatory prayers at home and have every household member pray
Pray with children at home so they learn by watching their parents
Read and reflect on a few verses of Qur'an together as a family daily instead of hours of entertainment
Forgive family members when mistakes happen; avoid ego and pride at home
Smile often, treat it as a sunnah and an act of worship
Monitor what enters the home through screens, phones, and social media
Teach children love of Allah, the Prophet, Qur'an, honesty, modesty, and manners from day one, not in their teens
Eat together as a family in one fixed eating area, mentioning Allah's name
Show physical affection to children (embrace them, pass a hand over their heads)
Donate blood at the upcoming masjid blood drive
Respect and thank young parking volunteers; wait for the next jumu'ah if the masjid is full
