Make Islam easy and serve your community
“Make Islam easy for people and at first for yourself as well.”
Muslims should make Islam easy and welcoming, root themselves in the Prophet’s example, prioritize personal obligations, and serve their families and communities with excellence and patience.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Welcomes newcomers and explains the structure and purpose of the Friday khutbah.
- Defines Islam through tawhid, revelation, and shahadah, urging perseverance and an easy path into Islam.
- Uses the companions’ varied journeys and the Ansar’s response after Hunayn to teach loyalty, forgiveness, and welcome.
- Connects the Ansar’s pledge to present responsibility for bringing Islam into homes and communities amid testing.
- Offers practical guidance on obligations, gentleness, unity across differences, beneficial knowledge, and purposeful excellence.
- Closes with communal service, stewardship, prayers, and the Friday prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“On the one hand, maintain your own faith, even if you know you're going to fall short again and again, because we all fall short again and again.”
“And second, let people enter Islam without burdening them with the secondary issues and pushing people away based on secondary issues.”
“Make Islam easy for people and at first for yourself as well.”
“Build money and power but you live like a traveler in this dunya. You are channeling these resources towards our common goals.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminds us that Islam should be made easy and welcoming, especially for people who are new or returning. We can learn from the Ansar by bringing faith into our homes and serving the people around us. We should begin with the obligations Allah has placed on us, then grow steadily without judging others harshly. Excellence, knowledge, family life, and resources are valuable when they are used for service rather than pride. As a community, we are called to work together for justice, education, protection, and the care of Allah’s creation.
- What obligation should we prioritize more carefully this week?
- How can one of our strengths become a way to serve others?
