Serve patiently before seeking leadership
“I serve like a servant for the sake of Allah; I will never even seek leadership.”
Islam calls every believer to replace small, self-centered ambitions with an Allah-centered mission of responsible service, institution-building, and patient teamwork for the good of the ummah.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Uses straight-path imagery to argue for purposeful progress toward Allah.
- Defines life's goal as knowing and loving Allah, worshiping Him, and serving as khalifa.
- Applies universal leadership responsibility to families, workplaces, and the wider ummah.
- Calls Muslims to build institutions that solve communal problems together.
- Explains that effective teamwork requires enduring disagreement and practicing conflict resolution.
- Connects Palestine's suffering to a call for larger dreams, humility, and long-term service.
- Ends with support for MCA3's school expansion and a prayer for united action.
In the khateeb's words
“The purpose, to know Allah. to love Allah and based on that knowledge and love you build, you worship Allah and you abide by Allah's laws.”
“The sickness of this ummah is everyone wants to be a leader.”
“Find institutions. Work with teams. Say to yourself, until I serve 10 years, 10 years, I serve like a servant for the sake of Allah, I will never even seek leadership.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb said that Islam calls us to walk purposefully toward Allah, not live with only small personal dreams. Every person has responsibility, so believers should build institutions and solve community problems together. Disagreement is a normal stage of teamwork; we should communicate, resolve conflict, and keep serving rather than quitting. He urged people to develop patience and humility, serve before seeking leadership, and support the local school expansion so more children can learn and gather in a Muslim environment. The sermon connected these responsibilities to the suffering in Palestine and a plea for Allah to soften hearts and help the ummah work together.
- What is one community problem you would like to help solve?
- How can we keep working with people after a disagreement?
- What could humble service look like for you this year?
