Serving parents builds patience

“Be in the service of your mom.”

The khateeb, at 27:59

The khutbah argues that remembrance of Allah frees people from materialism, ego, and sin, and that this spiritual reorientation is lived through humble, patient service to one’s parents.

For the dinner table

The khateeb reminded us that the Quran teaches us how to live, and that remembering Allah helps us care for our souls. We can work, earn money, and handle our responsibilities while keeping Allah at the center of our lives. He encouraged us to look at our own behavior, be careful with our words, and show the kindness we speak about. He also asked us to remember our mothers’ sacrifices and treat our parents with humility and patience, while acknowledging that some family relationships are difficult. Through prayer, asking forgiveness when we hurt someone, and practicing kindness with our children, we can bring these reminders into our homes.

  2. When you feel annoyed, what could help you choose kinder words?
  3. What is one kind thing you could do for a parent or caregiver this week?
