Love and peace rebuild our community
“You don't have complete faith until you love the people around you.”
Islam is not merely private worship: by spreading peace, expressing love, maintaining relationships, and worshipping Allah, Muslims can rebuild communal bonds that counter modern loneliness.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Frames modern society’s loss of faith as producing meaninglessness, burnout, and disconnection.
- Uses the Prophet’s arrival in Medina to present peace, feeding others, family ties, and night prayer as foundational.
- Explains through hadith that complete faith requires loving others and making that love visible.
- Connects prophetic community-building to contemporary loneliness research and the health costs of isolation.
- Calls listeners to reach out, say salam, express love, notice absences, and strengthen communal connection.
- Concludes by asking Allah to help the community practice this sunnah of community.
In the khateeb's words
“Three out of four things that he mentioned in the very first address to the people of Medina.”
“You don't have complete faith until you love the people around you.”
“You can be surrounded by people, remember this, you can be surrounded by people but feel deeply lonely.”
“Maybe it's time for us to reach out to that friend of ours, that family member, and let them know.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah taught that Islam helps build a healthy community, not only private worship. The Prophet’s first advice in Medina included spreading peace, feeding people, maintaining family ties, and praying at night. Loving others and making that love visible through kind words, salam, visits, and attention strengthens faith and eases loneliness. We should notice who is missing, reach out to relatives and friends, and help people feel safe and valued. The sermon closed by asking Allah to help us live this communal sunnah while remembering people who are ill, grieving, or oppressed.
- Who could use a kind salam or check-in from you this week?
- How can you show someone you love them instead of assuming they already know?
- What helps people feel included at the masjid?
