Honor your parents with gentle care
“Deal with them and speak to them with kind, gentle, polite words.”
After worshipping Allah, Muslims must honor and care for their parents, especially in old age, while never obeying them in disobedience to Allah and continuing to honor deceased parents through supplication and charity.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Establishes dutifulness to parents as a central obligation after worshipping Allah.
- Explains that disobedience to parents is required when they command shirk or sin, but respectful ties remain.
- Urges patient care for aging parents, gentle speech, and gratitude for how they cared for children.
- Uses hadith to rank dutifulness to parents after prayer and, in some cases, above jihad.
- Emphasizes mothers’ greater claim, care for non-Muslim parents, and avoiding insults or grief.
- Addresses deceased parents through du'a, istighfar, and sadaqah on their behalf.
In the khateeb's words
“Rather, deal with them and speak to them with kind, gentle, polite words.”
“Go back to them and make your parents happy bring joy to them make them cheerful in the same manner in which you made them upset”
“don't look at them as a burden it is a blessing for Allah to expediate of your sins forgive you of your sins”
“if our parents have passed away ask Allah to forgive them if our parents are sick visit them and also from the things that can benefit our parents it's for us to live sadaqah on their behalf”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that after worshipping Allah, one of our greatest responsibilities is to honor our parents. We should speak gently, care for them as they grow old, and never insult or abandon them; obedience to parents does not include disobeying Allah, but respectful ties remain. The Prophet’s examples place serving parents ahead of journeys for jihad and give special emphasis to mothers because of their sacrifices. If parents have died, we can still honor them by praying for forgiveness and giving charity on their behalf.
- How can we show love to a parent or grandparent who needs more help?
- What prayer or charitable act could we do for a deceased relative?
