Justice and unity with our neighbors
“The same law that protected our mosque also protects our neighbors.”
Muslims should respond to community opposition and social division with balanced justice, honest self-criticism, lawful civic participation, neighborly relationships, and unity rather than extremism.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces McKinney mosque expansion and its unanimous city-council approval despite public opposition.
- Warns that fear, misinformation, polarization, and extremism undermine justice and social cohesion.
- Urges Muslims to apply justice consistently, including when criticism comes from within or outside the community.
- Calls for respecting neighbors, following local laws, using contextual wisdom, and building relationships.
- Affirms the rule of law while encouraging Muslims to defend their rights and serve their neighbors.
- Concludes with youth education, interfaith mutual aid during hardship, unity, and prayers for justice.
In the khateeb's words
“The same law that protected our mosque also protects our neighbors.”
“Relationship destroys stereotype much faster than the argument we need to build those relationships now.”
“The flood does not check our faith before it enters our home and our mercy should not check our neighbor's faith before it enters there.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah used the approval of a new masjid in McKinney to reflect on justice, responsibility, and community. The khateeb reminded us to reject hatred and extremism and to be fair even toward people we disagree with. He also asked us to recognize our own mistakes, listen to genuine complaints, and respect our neighbors’ parking, homes, and businesses. Being part of our community means building relationships and helping make life better for everyone around us. When hardship comes, neighbors need one another, and our care should reach people of every faith.
- How could we make coming to the masjid easier for the people who live or work nearby?
- What helps you listen fairly when someone says something you disagree with?
