True gratitude puts blessings to good use
“Don't just be grateful in your heart and grateful in your tongue.”
True gratitude requires actively recognizing Allah’s blessings, treating them as tests, using them responsibly, and responding with worship, justice, and humility.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Uses Thanksgiving as a doorway to deliberate gratitude amid increasing comfort.
- Introduces Dawud and Sulayman as prophet-kings who credited Allah for knowledge, power, and miracles.
- Shows Sulayman’s active gratitude through humility, repentance, and viewing blessings as tests.
- Applies the lesson to modern comforts, influence, and responsibility toward workers and the community.
- Closes with repentance and a post-prayer dua for remembrance, gratitude, and worship.
In the khateeb's words
“Don't just be grateful in your heart and grateful in your tongue. But actually do acts of shukr.”
“This favor, he looked at it as actually a test. And this should be the same attitude that we all need to develop.”
“What am I doing with this blessing? How am I utilizing this to my benefit and to benefit my Ummah?”
“When you have power over them, you're going to give them money. How should you treat them? With justice.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that gratitude can become harder when life becomes comfortable, so we must practice it deliberately. Dawud and Sulayman are presented as powerful kings who still credited Allah for their blessings, asked to remain righteous, and treated blessings as tests. Gratitude means more than saying thanks: it should shape good deeds, justice toward people who work for us, and responsible use of what we have. When we slip or become distracted, we should repent quickly and ask Allah after prayer to help us remember Him, thank Him, and worship Him well.
- What is one comfortable blessing you sometimes forget to appreciate?
- How can we use something Allah gave us to help someone else?
- What does fairness look like when someone is working for our family?
