Death & the hereafterFrom the masjid's own video, Jul 28, 2026.
Do not let your life pass you by
“The greatest calamity is to live a wasted life.”
In one sentence
Life is your single, irreplaceable chance to earn Jannah, and the greatest calamity is to let it slip away in heedlessness (ghafla) instead of repenting, worshipping, and doing good deeds before death comes.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Opening with Hasan al-Basri: 'O son of Adam, you are but days, when a day passes, part of you is gone'
- The reality of death around us and our indifference to it
- The true loss: a wasted, purposeless life measured by worldly metrics
- Modern heedlessness: work, eat, sleep, scrolling, sports, entertainment while the years pass
- Self-interrogation: how is your salah, iman, sadaqah, and khair?
- Ghafla defined as a disease of the heart; the regret of the dying who beg to return
- Hidden major sins: severing kinship, undutifulness to parents, ghiba and namima
- Call to tawbah, the hadith on health and free time, living as a stranger/passerby, and closing dua
Try this week
Reflect on your life so far and make the necessary changes before it is too late
Make sincere tawbah and stop persisting in haram (cigarettes, weed, alcohol, haram relationships, deceit)
Repair severed family ties and be dutiful to parents; stop backbiting and slandering
Attend the masjid, perform the prayers properly, and stop sleeping through Fajr
Use health and free time for worship, sadaqah, and guiding others instead of endless scrolling and entertainment
Hold yourself to account (muhasaba): ask what you have put forward for the afterlife
