Do good before opportunities disappear
“There is a deed that you can do today with the current living circumstances that you have today that you might not be able to do tomorrow.”
Because every day and circumstance creates unique opportunities for worship and service that may disappear, believers should hasten to do the good available now instead of postponing it.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Frames good deeds as time-limited opportunities, like an expiring purchase.
- Uses Hajj and prophetic guidance to show why believers should hasten rather than postpone.
- Explains opportunities that expire through changes in health, age, free time, and circumstances.
- Shows how early forgiveness, ihsan, and timely charity can be better than delayed action.
- Highlights serving parents, family, and loved ones before people or relationships change.
- Explains that urgent needs themselves may disappear, and calls listeners to respond promptly.
- Closes by urging Qur'an, charity, justice, remembrance, dua, and family care before opportunities expire.
In the khateeb's words
“Every single day in some way is unique and gives you a unique way to please Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and to treat that day with a sense of urgency for that very reason.”
“The basic premise of this is that there is a deed that you can do today with the current living circumstances that you have today that you might not be able to do tomorrow.”
“Allah Azzawajal presented you with an opportunity to get you into Jannah. This is the thirsty dog moment for you.”
For the dinner table
Every day brings a chance to do good that may not be available tomorrow. Our health, free time, money, family relationships, and circumstances can all change, so we should not keep postponing worship or kindness. We should act on the good Allah places before us by helping family before they ask, giving charity when we can, and serving parents and loved ones now. We should be patient with our prayers while being quick to obey Allah, using each unique opportunity before it closes.
- What is one good thing you can do this week before the opportunity changes?
- Who in our family might appreciate kindness before they have to ask?
- What current blessing, time, health, or ability, can you use for Allah?
