Share Islam through respectful relationships
“First of all, we do not approach anyone with negatives or blaming for what they are doing or things of that kind.”
Muslims should respectfully share Islam with Christians by building relationships, beginning with shared beliefs, and presenting the Quran’s account of Jesus and Mary.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Uses compassion for people and animals as an analogy for warning others about the afterlife.
- Argues that America’s large Christian population and religious freedom create an opportunity for dawah.
- Advises Muslims to approach Christians through shared beliefs rather than criticism.
- Highlights Quranic teachings about Mary and Jesus, especially their purity, prophethood, miracles, and worship of one God.
- Encourages listeners to read Surah Maryam and Surah Al-Imran and share their message with Christian neighbors.
- Closes with a prayer for courage, guidance, and oppressed people worldwide.
In the khateeb's words
“This is a common Allah given instinct in us and at that time I'm not worried whether this guy who is coming is a Muslim, Christian, Hindu, doesn't matter, human being or animal, I will stop.”
“First of all, we do not approach anyone with negatives or blaming for what they are doing or things of that kind. We can start with commonalities.”
“If they read the surah Maryam and surah Al-Imran, these are the two surahs that I would recommend if you have not read it, please go read it.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah encouraged us to share Islam out of care for other people. The khateeb used the example of warning someone about a sinkhole to explain that concern. He urged us to begin conversations with Christians through shared beliefs and good relationships, without starting with blame. He recommended reading Surah Maryam and Surah Al-Imran to understand and share what the Quran says about Maryam and Isa. Through the passages he read, he highlighted Isa’s devotion to Allah, prayer, charity, and kindness to his mother.
- What is something you would like a friend to understand about your faith?
- How can you show kindness while talking with someone whose beliefs differ from yours?
- What could you do this week to be a blessing to someone at home?
