Muslims should engage local civic systems
“We need to be involved, we need to know what are the opportunities in Long Beach.”
Because Allah’s signs and the Prophet’s example make Muslims responsible ambassadors, they should cultivate truthful God-consciousness and participate constructively in America’s civic systems.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Reminds listeners to review their deeds, pursue honesty, avoid wrongdoing, and seek Allah’s forgiveness.
- Reflects on the order and majesty of creation as signs of Allah and a prompt to do good.
- Introduces “system awareness” and Muslims’ responsibilities as ambassadors of Muhammad.
- Uses the Prophet’s Farewell Sermon and Muslims’ Quranic knowledge to frame a duty to share the message.
- Describes alleged anti-Muslim distortions in Texas curriculum and limited Muslim-parent participation.
- Calls Long Beach Muslims to engage with school districts, library boards, city councils, and other civic institutions.
In the khateeb's words
“Are we conscious of Allah like it deserves to be?”
“Look. Look at my universe. Be intelligent. Don't just look at the stars and not realize what is behind it.”
“When I say system awareness, it means we need to be involved, we need to know what are the opportunities in Long Beach.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us to be conscious of Allah and think about how we have grown in goodness since last Friday. He emphasized honesty and integrity, explaining that truthfulness helps improve our actions and service to Allah. He invited us to reflect on the universe with wonder and gratitude for Allah’s majesty and care. He also described Muslims as ambassadors of Prophet Muhammad, whose compassion and care should guide our conduct. His call for “system awareness” encouraged us to understand and participate in local institutions, including schools, libraries, and city councils.
- What good deed would you like to practice before next Jumu'ah?
- When is telling the truth difficult, and what helps you do it?
- What would you like to help improve at your school or local library?
