Take responsibility for your faith and community
“Action is something that we should be doing.”
Muslims must take personal responsibility and initiative for their faith and community, choosing sincere action and sacrifice over passivity while protecting their families' deen and preparing for accountability.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with calls to taqwa and personal God-consciousness.
- Argues that the Ummah must reject passivity and take initiative.
- Uses Imam Abu Hanifah and other imams as examples of principled scholarship and service.
- Warns families to protect their children's deen and remain connected to the masjid.
- Contrasts worldly success with lasting accountability and urges personal change.
- Uses the companions' generosity to illustrate sincere action, then closes with prayers for the oppressed and congregational prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“We have the choice of doing good with it or to not do any good.”
“Action is something that we should be doing. We should be taking initiative towards even if it isn't something small.”
“This is the understanding we get when we put action forward, whether it is donation or time or effort in any aspects.”
“Are you from the people who look and point and talk about others? Or are you from the people who take action and show that you are someone here for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala?”
For the dinner table
The imam reminds us that Allah gives each person abilities and opportunities, and faith asks us to use them rather than sit back. He uses Imam Abu Hanifah and the companions as examples of people who served Islam through knowledge, sacrifice, and action. Our choices about friends, work, comfort, and our children's upbringing shape our deen, so worldly success is not worth losing faith. The khutbah calls us to return to Allah, stay connected to the masjid, and serve with our time, effort, and wealth. It also reminds us to remember the Day of Judgment and pray for people facing oppression.
- What is one good action you could take this week instead of just talking about it?
- How can our family stay more connected to the masjid and protect our deen?
- When might comfort or success become a test rather than simply a blessing?
