Honoring parents brings blessings
“Care for your parents before it is too late.”
Honoring parents is a central act of worship and a path to blessings, while disrespecting them is a grave sin with consequences in this life and the next.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Connects desired blessings, Paradise, accepted deeds, provision, and answered supplication, to kindness toward parents.
- Uses Quranic commands pairing worship of Allah with kindness to parents and mentions the mother's hardship.
- Presents dutifulness to parents as among the best deeds, while shirk and disobedience to parents are among the worst major sins.
- Warns against arguing, raising voices, criticism, ignoring religious guidance, and threatening to abandon parents.
- Uses a mother-heart poem and the image of a lost door to Paradise to illustrate parental love and loss.
- Explains how to honor deceased parents through prayer, forgiveness, fulfilling wishes, maintaining relatives, honoring friends, and charity.
In the khateeb's words
“So the key word dear brothers and sisters for all of that Is to be beautiful to our parents”
“Our parents they are the ones who have the limitless love for us.”
“Sometimes they are harsh. Because they see what we do not see. Sometimes they are harsh. Because they love us.”
“care for your parents before it is too late and being beautiful to the parents after death is harder”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that kindness to our parents is closely connected to worshipping Allah and can bring blessing, accepted deeds, and goodness in our lives. Being beautiful to parents includes speaking gently, listening, appreciating their sacrifices, and avoiding arguments, criticism, and raised voices. Parents may sometimes be strict because they see dangers we do not see and want what is best for us. If our parents have passed away, we can still honor them through dua, asking Allah to forgive them, fulfilling their wishes, caring for relatives, honoring their friends, and giving charity on their behalf. We should begin showing gratitude today, while we still have the opportunity.
- What is one kind thing you can do for a parent this week?
- How can you disagree with a parent without raising your voice?
- What dua or good deed could we do for a relative who has passed away?
