True contentment comes through remembering Allah
“True happiness only comes with the remembrance of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
Worldly pleasures and possessions cannot provide lasting contentment, which comes through remembering Allah, appreciating blessings, and remembering death.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Explains kafir as one who covers or ignores truth, using the farmer metaphor.
- Shows through crops and Imam Ghazali’s examples that worldly pleasures are temporary or merely relieve discomfort.
- Presents remembrance of Allah and the spiritual station of mutma’innah as the source of true contentment.
- Uses the hadith about one and two valleys of gold to illustrate human greed.
- Recommends comparing oneself with those who have less and recognizing everything as Allah’s blessing.
- Encourages attending janazah and remembering death as a reality check and motivation for self-accountability.
In the khateeb's words
“True happiness only comes with the remembrance of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“Worldly. Pleasures. Do not actually. Bring about. Long-term contentment. And long-term happiness.”
“The thing that's going to fill his mouth. Is going to be the dirt in his grave.”
“Look at those people. Who have Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Not to look down upon them. Not to feel bad for them. No. But to appreciate what we have.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that possessions and pleasures cannot give us lasting happiness by themselves. They may relieve hunger, discomfort, or desire, but true contentment comes from remembering Allah. We should notice the blessings we have instead of constantly comparing ourselves with people who have more. Remembering death, including through attending a janazah, helps us return to what matters and examine our own lives. The goal is to seek Allah’s pleasure and become more grateful, balanced, and accountable.
- What is one blessing you sometimes forget to appreciate?
- When has remembering death helped you focus on what matters?
- What is one way we can practice remembrance of Allah this week?
