Community & unityFrom the masjid's own video, Jul 25, 2026.
Build stronger communities through teamwork and planning
“If three of you are traveling, choose someone as your captain, someone as your ameer, someone as your coordinator.”
In one sentence
The recently concluded World Cup offers Muslims concrete lessons, teamwork, placing people in the right roles, planning, leadership and mentorship, avoiding celebrity worship, and physical fitness, all of which are already taught and modeled in Islam.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Adhan/opening, then framing: the World Cup is over but holds deeper lessons
- Lesson 1: teamwork and collaboration, grounded in Surah al-Ma'idah and al-Hasan al-Basri
- Lesson 2: putting the right person in the right place, modeled by the Prophet's assignments (Bilal, Mu'adh, Khalid, Hassan ibn Thabit)
- Lesson 3: planning and strategy, illustrated by Yusuf's 14-year famine plan and the carefully planned Hijrah
- Lesson 4: captain and coach, organized leadership (hadith on appointing an ameer) and the necessity of mentors ('man la shaykha lahu...'), with the imam-student chain of the great scholars
- Warning against celebrity worship syndrome; admire athletes only in what they are good at
- Sports and fitness as an Islamic value (Umar's saying on swimming, archery, riding); summer exhortation to go outside and exercise
- Closing dua, janaza announcement and condolences, then iqamah and prayer
Try this week
Work together as one community with one goal instead of fragmenting
Put the right person in the right role in every community undertaking, match skills to tasks
Act, but act with a plan at the individual, family, and community level
Appoint a leader/coordinator when working or traveling in a group
Actively seek a mentor, and if experienced, mentor and guide young people
Admire athletes only for their sport; take life's guidance from Islam, not celebrities
Go outside this summer, exercise, hike, jog, play soccer, bike or walk instead of driving, and stay physically fit at every age
Attend the janaza prayer after Jumu'ah for the deceased sister
