Build a family through prophetic example

ICI · Saad Haque

“The best of you are the best to their families.”

The khateeb, at 1:53

In one sentence

A prophetic family unit is built through mutual spousal responsibility, lawful provision, non-abusive conduct, early spiritual upbringing, parental example, community support, and regular prayer for the family.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. The Prophet's example establishes kindness to spouses and mutual effort beyond minimum rights.
  2. Both spouses share responsibility for the household and its well-being.
  3. Providing for one's family, earning lawfully, and avoiding riba bring reward and barakah.
  4. Families must resist division, oppression, and abuse by following the Prophet's example.
  5. Parents should teach faith and prayer from childhood rather than waiting until adolescence.
  6. Parents must lead by example, seek help from the masjid and scholars, involve children in community, and make dua for them.

Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

The khutbah reminded us that a prophetic family begins with treating the people at home with kindness, responsibility, and gratitude. Instead of doing the bare minimum or keeping score, every family member should try to give generously for the sake of Allah. Caring for a family includes providing for its physical, financial, emotional, and spiritual well-being through halal means and sincere intentions. Parents should teach faith from a young age, lead through their own example, and seek help from knowledgeable teachers when needed. We should also protect our families from harm, stay connected to the masjid and community, and regularly make dua for one another.

  1. What is one small kindness that would make our home feel more peaceful this week?
  2. What do you learn from what the adults in our family do, not just from what they say?
  3. What is one question about Islam that you would like us to explore together?
